Petro price hike triggers widespread protests

    KURNOOL: Supporters of Telugu Desam and Left parties opposed the hike in the prices of petroleum products here on Tuesday. The TDP, CPI and CPI(M) organised demonstrations separately.

    TDP leaders -- Somisetty Venkateswarlu, Zilla Parishad Chairman, B. Venkatramudu and former Mayor Bangi Anantaiah -- rode on a cart drawn by donkeys. They criticized the Central Government for increasing the prices of petroleum products that hurt the common man deeply.

    Bikes dragged

    Supporters CPI(M) led by district secretary T. Shadrak dragged bikes on road. Mr. Shadrak said the UPA Government had increased the prices six times after it came to power. He said the Left parties would reconsider their support to the UPA government if same trend continued.

    CPI activists led by city secretary K. Jagannatham demonstrated at the collectorate by pulling the autorickshaws with ropes.

    Kadapa Staff Reporter writes: CPI(M) functionaries stopped Mumbai-Chennai Dadar Express for about half-an-hour at Kadapa railway station.

    Following a scuffle with the police, the latter arrested the protesters. CPI district secretariat member N. Ravisankar Reddy termed it as unfair and accused the Centre of not considering alternatives suggested by the Leftist parties.

    CPI(M) town secretary K. Anjaneyulu and leaders C. Babu, S. Siddharamaiah and T. Sunil also took part. Those arrested were released later.
