Regional office sought to protect Wakf assets

Staff Reporter

Only 10 per cent of the Rs. 1,000-cr. property in Kurnool under control of the Board

KURNOOL: Several organisations representing minorities urged the Legislative Committee on Minority Welfare to set up a regional office here to protect the land properties of Wakf Board. Members of the panel Ahmedulla (Cuddapah MLA) and M.A. Gafoor (Kurnool MLA) promised to recommend the Government to locate the regional office at Kurnool and at other places for the remaining two regions.

Representatives of United Muslim Forum told the House committee that Wakf Board had properties worth Rs. 1,000 crores in and around Kurnool city but only 10 per cent of it was under the control of the Board now. The regional office here would help them take up the issues of land alienations with the officials immediately. Officers of the rank of RDOs would be posted to protect the lands.

The representatives also brought to the notice of the Committee the need for making the law stringent against alienation of Wakf properties. Though Wakf Act barred alienation of land and the Collector notified against alienation, the Court struck down the order terming the Collector not a competent authority to direct the department of registrations.
