BANGALORE: The Karnataka Badminton Association, in a welcome move to improve the standard of the game in the State, has formed a Badminton Development Committee headed by the former National champion and coach, U. Vimal Kumar. Announcing this here on Monday, Mr. Vivek Karan, the president of KBA, said the committee, which comprised eight members, would be backed by a corpus fund initially with Rs.5 lakhs. "The idea of forming a Badminton Development Committee was given to us by Prakash Padukone and we have accepted his suggestion," said Mr. Karan. Besides the BDC, the other major initiative of the KBA is to send a coach to Malaysia to study the techniques involved in training youngsters, especially school going children. Vimal Kumar said a lot of emphasis was laid on school level badminton in Malaysia and the grassroot development of the game was done at that level. KBA also planned to conduct inter-school tournaments, the first of which would be held in Bangalore during August-September. In another major step, KBA has decided to award `Star' rating to major tournaments in the State, depending on the prize money. The rating and rankings would depend on the quality of competition and prize money offered at the event. KBA also plans to throw open its doors to corporates and it will conduct corporate events during November. The exercise would also help KBA find a sponsor for the State teams, Mr. Karan said. The KBA chief said that as in the past, KBA would conduct its clinics for umpires and also coaching camps for district players.
