Belgaum
Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Members of a three-member team of the Medical Council India, who arrived here on Tuesday to inspect infrastructure development for the proposed government medical college here, reportedly made contrasting observations. Achal Gulati, Shyam Singlani and Seema Madan visited the site of the proposed Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) on the premises of the District Government Hospital to ascertain the infrastructure created. The Government has assured it will make efforts to ensure that at least one of the six proposed medical college starts functioning from the coming academic year. One of the members of the team is learnt to have said that the MCI will evaluate facilities only when they are ready. However, another member reportedly said the college could start functioning shortly. Hassan Staff Correspondent writes: A three-member MCI team on Tuesday inspected work on the proposed government medical college. Mallesh Gupta, Anand Kannan and Kanvin Dey visited Srichamarajendra District Hospital and found out whether the hospital had facilities as per norms laid by the MCI. They inspected the progress of work on the college building. Sources said the team would resume its inspection on Wednesday. It is expected to submit a report to the MCI by June 15. Raichur Staff Correspondent reports: Although the Government plans to establish six new medical colleges, only the one in Belgaum is likely to start functioning in the coming academic year. This was indicated by B.R. Dubey, a member of the MCI team which is inspecting the facilities created, at a meeting with officials of the Public Works Department here on Tuesday. Mr. Dubey said no steps had been taken by the Government to appoint lecturers for the medical college in Raichur. Work on the college building was likely to be completed only by December.
