HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has announced launch of a sustained agitation until the fuel price hike of Rs.4.47 (petrol) and Rs.2.19 (diesel) is rolled back. At a press conference here on Tuesday, U. Venkateswarlu, TDP Polit Bureau member, lashed out at the sixth hike on the sixth day of the sixth month in 2006. Since the UPA assumed power, he said petrol price had gone up 177 per cent (Rs. 17.07), diesel 213 per cent (Rs. 11.70) and liquid petroleum gas 40 per cent. While the Centre claimed it could not do anything about the hike caused by oil price mechanism, what were the States doing about sales tax? R. Chandrasekhara Reddy, MP, and S. Venugopalachari, spokesman, asked. "Why are States not doing anything about reducing ST? What prevented Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy from being sympathetic to the common man," they wondered.
Cadre mobilisation
K. Srihari, party general secretary, said he had written to TDP district presidents to mobilise cadre and coordinate with like-minded parties and make the agitational programme a success. As part of the agitation, the party would stage dharnas in mandal headquarters on June 9, 10 and 11. Except the Congress, BJP and TRS, all others would be invited to take part in the agitation.
