GUNTUR: Telugu Desam Party, CPI and CPI (M) on Tuesday organized rail roko, rallies, rasta roko and dharnas as a protest to the hike in prices of petroleum announced by the Centre on Monday night. Communist Party of India district secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao led party workers at Mangalagiri to stop the Vijayawada-Narsaraopet passenger for 20 minutes and a goods train for half-an-hour demanding immediate withdrawal of hike.
Rallies, effigies burnt
Had the Communist parties not raised a hue and cry over the massive price spiral that was actually proposed, the Government would have gone ahead with hike in kerosene and LPG prices, Mr. Nageswara Rao said. At Naaz Centre in Guntur, CPI activists led by M.J. Mohan Rao took out a rally and burnt an effigy of UPA Government. At Tenali too, the CPI took out a rally. Telugu Desam Party leaders sat in a dharna and rasta roko from 11 a.m. at Sankar Vilas Centre in the city and raised slogans against increasing the price of petroleum products for the sixth time in the past two years. The police personnel arrested 30 TDP leaders and took them to the Arundelpet Police Station. Later, they were released within half-an-hour on personal surety. When party workers tried to reorganize dharna in the afternoon on the Ring Road, police intervened and prevented them from doing so.
