Many criminals held, stress on accident reduction

KOCHI: The city police are getting good response after a special crime prevention drive began on June 1. During this special drive, meant for monsoon, accent was given on accident prevention and arresting criminals against whom warrants were issued.

The police had been concentrating on checking along the entry points to the city. Special patrolling is in place at areas like Thiruvankulam, where there had been instances of housebreaks.

As part of the special drive named `Operation Monsoon', the police are concentrating on accident prevention. In this connection, a public notice was issued last month demanding the public to maintain their vehicles in proper condition.

During daylong drive conducted on June 3, 442 vehicle owners were booked for not maintaining the vehicles in proper condition. Similarly, 100 persons were arrested for drunken driving.

"No accident death has been reported from the city limits after the monsoon set in," said P. Vijayan, City Police Commissioner.

The police officers at station levels have been asked to execute warrants issued for criminals in their jurisdiction. During the special checking conducted on Monday, 39 warrants were executed.

Strict checking is in place at entry points, during which a couple of major arrests were made. Five persons were arrested near Varappuzha Bridge along with arms, packets of chilly powder and masks on Sunday. This was followed by another arrest of six persons from Thrikakkara range, who were suspected to commit crimes at Judges Avenue.

Presence of officers during night patrolling has been increased for the special drive. No major housebreaks, which usually increases during monsoon, has been reported so far from city limits.

Statistics available with the District Crime Records Bureau shows that the city has been going through a phase of less crime when compared to the same period last year.

The number of ordinary theft reported between January and April of 2004 was 164, which was 153 in 2005 and 100 in 2006. Housebreak theft during night was 71 in these four months in 2004, 68 in 2005 and 52 in 2006. Housebreak theft during day was 21 in 2004, 16 in 2005 and 13 in 2006.
