HYDERABAD: Work on the first phase of long the Outer Ring Road (ORR) project to decongest traffic flow and provide quicker access to all parts of the city began here on Tuesday. Of the 162-km ORR, the first phase of 24-km access-controlled speedway from Gachibowli to Shamshabad is split into two packages. Package-I of 11-km eight-lane road from Gachibowli to the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA) will be executed by the Moscow-based Russian Company Corporation Transstroy at an estimated cost of Rs. 219.74 crores. The second one will be executed by a Taiwanese firm Continental Engineering Corporation covering 13.3 km from the APPA to Tondupally beyond Shamshabad at an estimated cost of Rs. 295 crores. The first phase is expected to be completed in 30 months time of which the four-lane connectivity is to be achieved within 12 months and eight-lane connectivity in 18 months.
Economic development
Minister for Mines and Geology P. Sabitha Indra Reddy symbolically broke a coconut at Narsingi for Package-I to mark the commencement of work while Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Koneru Ranga Rao did the honours for the second package. Mr. Rao said that the Rs.4,000-crore project would aid Hyderabad in emerging as a model city in the country. Along with ORR, other infrastructure facilities would be stepped up making the city a sought-after destination. Ambassador of Russian Federation in India Trubnikov Viacheslav Ivanovich described the project launch as a tremendous step in the development of infrastructure. The project would kick start economic development all around Hyderabad. Ms. Sabitha Reddy said that the compensation to the displaced families was finalised as per the agreed plan because of the keen interest taken by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. HUDA Chairman D. Sudheer Reddy also spoke. Foundation stone for Express Colony Sectors I and II at Kismatpur and Shamshabad respectively were also laid. As many as 82 persons, who would lose houses in the first phase would be given 250 sq. yards of site each at the colonies to be developed by the HUDA. MP R.S ambasiva Rao, Secretary, MA &UD, S.P. Singh, HUDA Vice-Chairman Jayesh Ranjan, ORR Project Director Piyush Kumar and senior HUDA officials were present.
