VIJAYAWADA: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) urban unit organised a rally in the city on Tuesday in protest against what its leaders called a `back-breaking hike in petroleum prices' by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre. The TDP leaders and activists went in the rally from the party office at Suryaraopet to Sub-Collector's Office and submitted a memorandum to the officials demanding withdrawal of the hike. In a blistering attack on the Congress party, TDP urban general secretary Nagul Meera said that the present hike would not only hurt vehicle owners but also break the back of the common man by causing spiralling rise in prices of essential commodities. "The common man is already struggling to earn his livelihood under the Congress rule. It is made more miserable now because of the Government's failure," he added.
Violation of promise
Mr. Meera pointed out that in the past two years, the UPA Government had hiked the petroleum prices six times in violation of its promise to the people. He advised the Left parties not to call off their agitation till the price hike was rolled back. "If the Left parties discard their double standards and exert pressure on the Centre, they can achieve the rollback. It is because of the Left support that the Congress is perpetrating its misrule," he said. TDP urban secretary Boppana Raghavendra Rao, vice-president Katragadda Nagamalleswara Rao (Babu) and others were present.
