Man arrested with heroin

NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man at Defence Colony in South Delhi on charges of smuggling heroin from Punjab to the Capital. Four kg of fine quality heroin, suspected to be of Afghanistan origin, was recovered from his possession.

The accused, Sachin Arora, is a resident of Amritsar. He was arrested by the headquarters division of the DRI. During interrogation, Sachin allegedly disclosed that he had brought the consignment to sell it to a Nigerian national here in Delhi. Investigations revealed that the contraband had been smuggled into the country through the Indo-Pakistan border along Punjab, which is considered to be a common route for heroin trade.

Passport Adalat on June 10

NEW DELHI: The Regional Passport Office (RPO) will hold a ``Passport Adalat'' on June 10, 2006 from 10 am to 2 pm to consider pending applications dated up to April 30, 2006.

Applicants should send details of their pending applications to the RPO Delhi not later than June 8, 2006.

On June 10, applicants may attend the adalat with all documents, objection and call letters if any issued by the RPO along with original documents pertaining to proof of age, present address and self-attested photocopies of the same.

Five held for running coin melting factory

NEW DELHI: Five persons have been arrested for running a coin melting factory at Nangloi in West Delhi, police said.

Coins of various denominations weighing 530 kg, 18 moulded bricks each weighing 32 kg, as well as tools etc used in the illegal process were seized from them during a raid on Monday evening.

Sukh Ram's petition dismissed

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has dismissed an appeal of former Communication Minister Sukh Ram against the order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) seeking quashing of the demand for more tax from him for his income between 1987-88 and 1997-98.

While dismissing the petition, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Vipin Sanghi observed that it was not possible to reappreciate the evidence, particularly when the assessee had not been able to show any perversity in the order passed by the Tribunal.

Delhi hospital fined for defunct respirator

NEW DELHI: A city private hospital, which, despite having a defunct respirator, admitted and conducted surgery on a road accident victim who died following respiratory complications has been asked by the apex Consumer court to pay up Rs.4 lakh in compensation.

A National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Bench comprising Justice M B Shah and Member Rajyalakshmi Rao, deciding the medical negligence claim case of one Geetu Sapra, held the central Delhi-based Dr B L Kapoor Memorial Hospital and one of its orthopaedic surgeons K P Mishra guilty of ``deficiency of service''.
