Notifications issued for second phase of polls

Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal elections on June 27


  • Last date to file nominations is June 14
  • Polls to cover Villianoor commune panchayat council and village panchayats

    Pondicherry: State Election Commissioner of Pondicherry, R. Narayana, announced here on Wednesday the publication of the statutory notifications setting in motion the second phase of civic polls (scheduled for June 27) to elect on party basis the chairmen of the Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal councils and their councillors.

    Mr. Narayana told newspersons that the second phase of polls would also cover the election of members of the Villianoor commune panchayat council as well as the presidents and ward members of the village panchayats He said that nominations can be filed before the Director of Industries, Dr. Jayantha Kumar Ray, who is the Returning Officer for the Pondicherry municipal council election, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on all working days. His office is situated in the Bharathidasan Government College for Women on Mahatma Gandhi Road here.

    The managing director of the Pondicherry Tourism and Transport Development Corporation G. Panneerselvam is the Returning Officer for Oulgaret municipal council polls and nominations can be filed before him at his office in Kaanchi Maamunivar Centre for Post Graduate Studies at Lawspet. The managing director of Pondicherry Adi Dravidar Development Corporation (PADCO), K. Jayavelu is the Returning Officer for the Villianoor commune panchayat polls and his office is situated on the campus of the Government Women's college at Villianoor.

    At the panchayat level, election of members of the commune panchayat council alone would take place on party basis while the election of the presidents and members of the village panchayats would be held on non-party basis, he said.

    The last date to file nominations (second phase) is June 14. While scrutiny of papers will take place on June 15, the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 17. Pondicherry municipal council has 42 Councillors while the Oulgaret municipal council has 37 councillors. The Villianoor commune panchayat council has 18 members while the number of village panchayats would be also 18. There would be election of 174 village panchayat ward members in Villianoor.
