Keshava Rao's directive to DCC chiefs

Hyderabad: APCC president K. Keshava Rao has instructed DCC presidents to convene executive committee meetings on June 10 in view of the coming panchayat elections to identify local priorities and decide on alliances.

The executive meeting chaired by Dr. Rao here on Wednesday felt that the party would be able to maintain its winning stride in the panchayat elections too. - Special Correspondent

Three landmines unearthed

WARANAGAL: The police have unearthed three landmines near Manubothulagutta forest area near Konapur village in Tadvai mandal here. Each landmine contained 3 kg of explosive material and was arranged in steel carriages. The police suspect that they were planted by the Maoists. - Staff Reporter

Arms dump recovered

ONGOLE: The police unearthed two dumps belonging to the CPI (Maoist) in Prakasam district on Thursday and recovered arms and ammunition from them. - Special Correspondent

RWS engineer murdered

ONGOLE: Rural Water Supply (RWS) assistant engineer P. Hemadri Rao was murdered allegedly by an NMR worker at Markapur on Thursday.

It was stated that the accused person Devireddy Hanuma Reddy, 25, had not been receiving salary for the last two months. When approached, Hemadri Rao reportedly asked him to question the contractor who engaged him. Not satisfied with the advice, Reddy allegedly hit Rao with a stone leading to his death. - Special Correspondent

Murder accused attempts suicide

ANANTAPUR: An accused in a murder case Balaraju of Somadepalli, who is in judicial remand in the sub-jail at Kadiri, allegedly attempted to slit his throat with an iron piece. He was admitted to Government Area Hospital.

According to the police, he was produced in a Kadiri court on May 25 as the magistrate in Penukonda was on leave. - Staff Reporter

Isolated rain forecast

HYDERABAD: With most of the State being covered by monsoon, isolated rain continued in Telangana and coastal Andhra on Wednesday. Dry weather prevailed in Rayalaseema.

Day temperatures rose at many places in Telangana but they were below normal. The State's highest temperature of 38 degree Celsius was recorded at Adilabad and Ramgundam.

According to a forecast, isolated rain will continue in the three regions of the State on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Apprenticeship in Railways

TIRUPATI: Department of Employment & Training has announced that SC Railways have invited applications for apprenticeship from ITI candidates who passed in fitter, welder, plumber, carpenter, motor mechanic, mechanic (diesel) and electrician courses to be engaged at Lallaguda carriage workshop, Secunderabad. Two convicted of fraud

HYDERABAD: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Hyderabad, had sentenced two employees of Indian Bank's Chittoor branch to undergo two-year rigorous imprisonment, as charges of fraud against them were proved. The convicted M. Ramakrishna Murthy, the then chief manager of the bank and M. Hema Shekhar Reddy, the then clerk, were accused of sanctioning crop loans to fictitious persons causing Rs. 8 lakh loss to the bank, according to a press release. Staff Reporter

`Indiramma' houses

ADILABAD: The Government has sanctioned 63,152 pucca houses to eligible persons in Adilabad district under Indiramma scheme. Objections on ineligible beneficiaries in Indiramma villages and applications from those eligible persons not enlisted would be received upto June 30, inquiries would be made upto July 31 and a final list of all eligible persons would be published latest by August 8. Two die in road accident

KARIMNAGAR: Two persons were killed when the two-wheeler on which they were travelling was hit by a lorry in front of the NTPC police station in Godavarikhani in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to police sources, the deceased, Chakrapani (41) and Damodar (30), local businessmen, were going from Ramagundam to Godavarikhani when the mishap occurred. The speeding lorry crushed them to death. Staff Reporter

Cleaner killed in accident

Kakinada: Cleaner of a lorry was killed when a vehicle, on its way from Kattipudi to Tuni, lost control and rammed into a stationary lorry near Bendapudi on the Annavaram by-pass road under Thondangi police station limits in the early hours of Wednesday.

Commits suicide

Kakinada: Thathapudi Chitteiah (35) a farm worker reportedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at his home in Kalvacherla village under Rajanagaram police station limits on Wednesday. Police attribute the extreme action to domestic problems. - Correspondent

YSR to visit Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will visit Srikakulam district on June 12. Details of the programme, however, have not yet been finalised. - Special Correspondent

`Jute traders incur losses'

VIZIANAGARAM: Vizianagaram Chamber of Commerce president V.V. Kasi Viswanadham told a press conference on Wednesday that owing to labour unrest in four jute mills -- Nellimarla, Aruna, East Coast and Bobbili -- for the past 2 to 3 months traders had incurred loss of Rs. 20 crores. He appealed to the Government to intervene and solve the problem amicably. - Correspondent

Medical camp for police

Kakinada: East Godavari Superintendent of Police Battini Srinivasulu inaugurated the free medical camp for police personnel organised by the District Police Officers Association at Apollo Hospital here on Wednesday. Hospital Administrative Officer Ranjit Reddy said 25 Armed Reserve Police personnel were provided free medical check up. Suryaprakasa Rao, Medical Services Director of Apollo Hospital said daily 15 police personnel would be provided free medical tests. - Correspondent

Assumes charge

VIJAYAWADA: A. Ankamma Rao assumed charge as the Deputy Secretary and regional coordinator for coastal district of Andhra Pradesh Residential Educational Institutions Society (APREIS) here on Wednesday. Mr. Rao will oversee the administrative and academic aspects of Residential Schools in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts. While 40 residential schools would come under his jurisdiction, he would also be the inspecting authority for 25 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, which were set up under Central Government scheme, spread across these districts.

Mr. Rao joined the APREIS as a trained graduate teacher at A.P.Residential School for tribal boys in Kinnerasani dam site in Khammam district in 1978. He later held the post of a Post-Graduate Teacher (PGT) and later became principal. He served in various residential schools as principal before he was elevated to the rank of the deputy secretary.

Farmers stage dharna

KUCHIPUDI: Traffic flow was affected on the busy Amruthalur Road for a few hours as farmers from Kuchipudi and its surrounding villages in Guntur district staged a rasta roko on Wednesday.

They were protesting against the Government's reluctance in taking up the necessary repairs to the irrigation canals before scheduled release of water on June 15. "Till now, not a single irrigation canal has been repaired and the Government has not released funds to the water users' associations," complained Rami Reddy, a farmer.
