The Carters will lead a group of 2,000 volunteers

NEW DELHI: The former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, and his wife Rosalyn will lead a group of 2,000 volunteers to build affordable homes for the poor in a village at Lonavala (Maharashtra) under the Habitat For Humanity International's Jimmy Carter Work Project.

The project is an annual event in which the couple joins volunteers to build simple, affordable homes for the poor. It is to be held in India in October as the signature event for Habitat's indiaBUILDS campaign.

The week-long event involving the building of 100 homes will be part of the five-year indiaBUILDS campaign to highlight the dire need for affordable housing in the country. The Carters are scheduled to visit India from October 29 to November 3, and will be accompanied by 2,000 volunteers from across the world. The houses in Lonavala will be built over eight acres bought for Rs. 50 lakh with help from donors. Each single-storeyed house will have a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The couple have been actively involved in the building project since 1984.
