Biased distribution of drinking water alleged

Staff Reporter

`Large parts of South and Outer Delhi are being deprived of water'

NEW DELHI: Accusing Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of indulging in biased distribution of drinking water supply in the Capital, senior BJP leader and Saket MLA Vijay Jolly on Wednesday alleged that large parts of South Delhi and Outer Delhi were being deprived of water as the supply was being diverted to feed the parliamentary constituency of the Chief Minister's son Sandeep Dikshit in East Delhi.

Mr. Jolly, who along with senior BJP leaders Vijay Goel and Ravi Shankar Prasad held a "Paani Adalat'' at the Jhandewalan office of the Delhi Jal Board, said his constituency and other parts of South Delhi were being given a step-motherly treatment by the Government. "Politics is being played on the water issue for no reason. It is causing great hardships to the people,'' he remarked.

Demanding that Sangam Vihar be connected with a proper pipeline with the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant, Mr. Jolly said while the poor were being deprived of water, the Chief Minister was moving in the direction of privatising the Jal Board.

"It is a matter of great concern that ground is being laid for multinational companies, who had done miserably abroad, to make a clandestine entry into the water sector in Delhi. The BJP will strongly oppose any such move to privatise supply and distribution of drinking water,'' he asserted.

Lashing out at the poor performance of the Jal Board, Mr. Jolly said the Chief Minister three years ago had promised 24X7 water supply for the people of Delhi but that promise has failed to materialise.

"The Chief Minister should immediately resign for her failure to perform. Corruption has reached a peak in the Jal Board and the recent instance of a senior official being caught taking bribe,'' he charged.

Mr. Jolly also announced sanction of Rs.50 lakhs from his MLA Constituency Development Fund for laying a pipeline from Sonia Vihar to Sangam Vihar.
