Delhi may face water shortage

NEW DELHI: Delhiites are likely to face water shortage in the coming days due to a reduction in supply from Haryana to the Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) water treatment plants at Wazirabad and Chandrawal.

The pond level at Wazirabad was recorded at 672.30 feet on Wednesday, reducing water supply to the Capital.

The affected areas will include Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Paharganj, Karol Bagh, Shadipur, Rajinder Nagar, Greater Kailash-II and Malviya Nagar. Residents have been advised to store sufficient quantities of water in advance.

Tankers would be made available at the following telephone numbers: 23814338 (Chandrawal Water Emergency), 25711129 and 25812901 (Rajinder Nagar), 26100644 and 26193218 (R.K. Puram), 29234746/7 and 29238543 (Greater Kailash-I) and 23370911 and 23370299 (I.P. Pumping Station)

Commonwealth Games preparations

NEW DELHI: A delegation of the Commonwealth Games Federation comprising Chief Executive Officer Mike Hooper, President Michael Fennell and Vice-President Tunku Imran along with Indian Olympic Association Chief Suresh Kalmadi called on Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor B.L. Joshi at Raj Nivas here on Wednesday. They discussed Delhi's preparedness for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Mr. Joshi assured the Federation members that work on the Commonwealth Games infrastructure was on the right track.

He said preparations for the Games Village and other facilities for hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 were progressing as planned.

Abha Choudhary takes charge

NEW DELHI: The newly appointed Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress president Abha Choudhary took charge at a function organised at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the function, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said it was heartening that an experienced grassroots level worker such as Ms. Choudhary had been selected for the position of president.

ITBP expedition flagged off

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil flagged in the third mountaineering expedition of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, at Vigyan Bhavan here on Wednesday.

To mark the occasion, ITBP Director-General V.K. Joshi hoisted the official flag of the ITBP for the mountaineering team that scaled the summit on May 14.

This is ITBP's third successful attempt on Everest, the others being in 1992 and 1996.
