Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: As part of its protests over the fuel price hike, the BJP on Wednesday organised a `chakka jam' throughout Uttar Pradesh, disrupting rail and road traffic in some parts of State. The party also held a sit-in in the state capital. Addressing the gathering, senior party leader Lalji Tandon said in the UPA regime, the prices are ``skyrocketing''. The BJP would continue registering its protest over the ``irrational'' fuel price rise, he said adding, the hike would lead to increase in prices of products in every segment. Tandon also criticised the Left parties, saying the hike was announced ``after their nod'' and their protests do not hold any water. BJP workers disrupted rail traffic in Gorakhpur and Mau besides Allahabad and road traffic in other districts. Though some trains were delayed due to the protests, the police and railway officials claimed to have succeeded in restoring traffic. In Varanasi, the protesting BJP workers sat on dharna and squatted on railway tracks at the Cantonment and other railway stations in the district and adjoining areas, throwing both rail and road traffic out of gear for several hours. The police detained a number of BJP activists, who were released later.
Roads block in M.P.
Cutting across party lines, the Ruling BJP and CPI(M) activists blocked roads and submitted memoranda at different places in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday in protest against the ``reckless'' hike in petro products' prices. Effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA regime were and slogans were raised at several locations. Demanding withdrawal of the hike, demonstrators warned that the agitation would be intensified. In the State Capital, BJP demonstrators staged a sit-in at Roshanpura crossing and then submitted a memo to the administration. A bullock-cart demonstration will be held tomorrow. Reports of demonstrations poured in from Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Sagar, Guna and other places. ``Demonstrators staged sit-in at divisional and district headquarters and submitted memoranda addressed to th President,'' said a release from the state BJP office. If the hike was not withdrawn, CPI(M) workers would join forces with other Left parties for blocking roads and staging demonstrations on June 13, a CPI(M) release said. - PTI & UNI
