`It was luck that made me an actor'

S.R. Ashok Kumar

"The minute I started donning the make-up I could not stop being an actor"

Actor Ranjitha

Ranjitha is preparing to score a century in films. She is happy to have worked in some of the best productions. After her wedding, Ranjitha has been shuttling between Chennai and Rajasthan. Ranjitha talks about her ambitions and entry into films.

I am friendly, but reserved. I do not allow everyone to get too close to me, but I maintain friendships.

I did not want to become an actor. It was pure chance that I became an artist and pure luck that I was discovered by director Bharathiraja.

My first film was in Telugu. The film titled Kadapa Reddemma was written by Parchuri Brothers. Director Bharathiraja saw my stills and selected me to act in Nadodi Thendral.

I studied in Holy Angels Convent and later in Ethiraj College. I did not know anything about cinema when I entered the field. Before work started Bharathiraja's assistants told me that the director could get angry and even slap people who do not act the way he tells them to. But, he did nothing of the sort. Now, I am working with him again after a long time in his bilingual film titled Cinema.

I am acting alongside Arjun and Nana Patekar in the movie, which is being made in Tamil and Hindi.

I must have done more than 80 films in all the southern languages, and now I am doing a Hindi film. I consider Nadodi Thendral to be my best movie till date. I was born and brought up in the city, but had to play a village girl in the 1940s, so I found it difficult to play the character. I enjoyed acting in movies such as Jaihind and Thamizhachi. I have also done a few good films in Malayalam.

After marrying Rakesh Menon, an Army Major, I have been travelling most of the time. So, I have not been able to do a lot of movies. When the teleserial `Roja' (telecast on Jaya TV) came my way, I told its makers that I though I did not stay in the city I could come over whenever they wanted to shoot. Now, I work here for 10 days and fly back home. I now accept roles only if I like the project.

I have not achieved much here. Becoming an actor was not my aim. But, the minute I started donning the make-up I could not stop being an actor. I want to move on and direct and produce films. But that will take some more time... I am not sure when and how that wish will come true.
