Protest against Tipaimukh project
In a memorandum, the Action Committee against Tipaimukh Project said the proposed dam would lead to the dislocation of about one lakh indigenous people. Also, construction of the dam would result in the submersion of 16 villages and have adverse effects on 90 other villages with serious environmental degradation. The dam would also submerge a 60 km-long stretch of National Highway 53, it pointed out. ACTIP convenor Nanda Kamei said: "We organised this rally to protect the indigenous people who would be affected by the construction of the dam including the Nagas, Hmars, Mizos and Paites. We need to protect their human rights, their land and their natural resources.''
Public meetings banned in Connaught Place
According to an order issued by Delhi Police commissioner K K Paul, the order has been issued due to the likelihood of obstruction of traffic, danger to human safety and disturbance of public tranquality due to the public meetings.
New weekly Rajdhani express train
The new 2454 New Delhi-Ranchi Rajdhani Express train will depart from New Delhi on every Sunday from June 11 at 4.45 p.m. to arrive at Ranchi at 10.55 a.m. the next day, a Northern Railway release said. In the return direction, train number 2453 Ranchi-New Delhi Rajddhani Express train will depart on every Tuesday from June 13 at 4.40 p.m. to arrive at New Delhi at 11.05 a.m. the next day.
One dies as house catches fire
One 35-year-old Gauri Shankar died after a house in Bholanath Nagar in Shahdara caught fire at 1.47 p.m., fire brigade sources said. Two fire tenders were rushed to put out the blaze which occurred after some household equipment caught fire. Though there was not much damage to the house, Gauri Shankar died in the fire, they said.
Delhi Government to move High Court
The Government will seek permission to continue with construction of the expressway over Kalindi Kunj on the ground that it is an important project aimed at decongesting Delhi roads, it was decided at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, official sources said.
