Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan has said that the Directorate of School Education was preparing a detailed plan to develop standard of computer literacy and communication skills of the students of the government schools in the Union Territory. Felicitating a batch of 17 students of both government and private schools who had secured the top three ranks in SSLC and Matriculation public examinations in March this year at a function here on Wednesday, Mr Shahjahan said that while scoring high marks was a laudable achievement for the students but at the same time their communication skills must be promoted. Special classes would be started in schools to teach the students English as the present day job market called for efficient and fluent communication in English.

All government schools would be linked through Internet connection and computers would be installed in institutions so that the students can at the click of the mouse open the entire world to enlarge their knowledge and augment efficiency to face the challenges and opportunities in the job market after getting the qualifications. Mr Shahjahan said that the overall pass percentage in SSLC this year in Pondicherry and Karaikal was around 73.20. There was however a fall by three percent in overall pass record now when compared to the achievement scored in the preceding year. He said the performance of the government schools also called for close attention, as they certainly required to be toned up. He said he would have a meeting soon with heads of the government schools to review the reasons that contributed to the fall in percentage of passes in government schools. Joint Director (Education) Mr. A Ramadoss and the Chief Educational Officer Mr C.Krishnaraj were among those who spoke.
