CHENNAI: A five-day international industrial exhibition began here on Thursday and is expected to generate business worth Rs. 100 crore, according to the Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturer's Association (AIEMA), the organisers. ACMEE 2006 focuses on automobiles, computers, machine tools, electrical equipment and electronic controls. Inaugurating the programme, Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said the knowledge pool and resources must be networked to facilitate invention and innovation, and build intellectual assets to give India a dominant position in the world.
Gap in technology
"An average Indian bicycle weighs 20 kg compared to the global average of 14 kg. In Japan and a few other countries it weighs even less than 10 kg. This difference amply describes the gap in technology between our country and other countries," Mr. Barnala noted. The current trend was towards lighter and more efficient products brought about by sustained research and development. Mr. Barnala said there was an immense potential in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu for industrialisation and development, and called for industrial exhibitions in those areas to augment growth and development. AIEMA president L.P. Shashidar Rao said the association had about 2,000 small and medium-size industries as members and employed over two lakh workers. He requested the Government to develop an information technology park on the estate premises as it had good road and rail links.
Direct interaction
ACMEE 2006 convener K.S. Jeyaraman said the event would showcase the cutting edge technology to promote trade opportunities. Its chairman R. Selvaraj said the meet would facilitate direct interaction between manufacturers and buyers. Less Ball, director, Global Sourcing Eaton Supply Chain Management, Amsterdam, stressed the need for maintaining high quality, right price and perfect delivery schedule. The first copy of the exhibition directory, released by the Governor, was received by Anirudh Prabhakaran, Chief Operating Officer, South Asia, 3i Infotech. The exhibition has 340 stalls, 20 per cent of them occupied by foreign participants. Products from 15 countries will be displayed.
