KC(M) lays claim to Rajya Sabha seat

Staff Reporter

`Congress had agreed to consider claim'

KOTTAYAM: The Kerala Congress(M) has formally laid its claim to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the State in which the UDF had a winning chance.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, party chairman C.F. Thomas said, as per an arrangement during the election of A.K. Antony to the Upper House in May 2005, the Congress had agreed to consider the claim of the KC(M) for the next vacancy. As such, the party had legitimate claim to the seat, he said.

At the time of filing of nomination on May 24, 2005, the Congress leaders had spoken to the media about the understanding and this was duly reported in the media, he said.

When vaccancies arose in 1991, 1997, 2003 and 2004, and when the interim elections were held in 2004 and 2005, the KC(M) had not pressed its claim and sent Congress leaders to the Rajya Sabha..

Though KC(M) representatives had been elected to the Upper House in 1979 (K.C. Sebastian), 1985 (Thomas Kuthiravattom) and 1995 (Joy Nadukkara), the party had no presence there during the past one decade or more, he said.
