Kalam to address FAPCCI members

HYDERABAD: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will addresses captains of industry and other members at the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here on Saturday. Timber smugglers attack forest officials

ADILABAD: Timber smugglers on Thursday attacked forest officials near Dedra forests in Bazarhatnoor mandal injuring five officials, including a Forest Range Officer. Boath Range Officer Raghavachari, Deputy Range Officers of Ichoda and Boath - Ramana and Jagadish Chandra respectively and forest guards - Raisuddin and Srinivas - who were injured in the attack were admitted to Adilabad headquarters hospital. - Staff Reporter

Takes over as CDFD Director

HYDERABAD: J. Gowrishankar has taken over as Director of Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD).

Dr. Gowrishankar was the Staff Scientist with the CDFD before his elevation. He is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences and the International Molecular Biology Network-Asia Pacific (A-IMBN). Dr. Gowrishankar has been recipient of Young Scientist awards of INSA and several other awards. - Special Correspondent

Gorakhpur Express rescheduled

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has rescheduled train no. 5089 Secunderabad- Gorakhpur Express. Consequently, it will leave at 10.30 a.m. on June 9 instead of 8.30 a.m. This is necessitated due to late running of the pairing train, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Maize for poultry ryots at reduced rates

HYDERABAD: The Centre has decided to release 5.3-lakh tonnes of maize to poultry farmers at low rates to provide relief to those who suffered losses following bird flu threat, according to a press release from NECC.

Global award for ASCI

HYDERABAD: Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) on Thursday announced that it had bagged the Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) Award, emerging winner from 153 proposals received from 40 nations.

In a press release, ASCI Senior Editor Rohit Raj Mathur said that the college's proposal was among 18 that were approved, received from 12 nations.

The award is given away by World Bank Group comprising GVEP of World Bank, ESMAP and Winrock International. - Staff Reporter

ICET results tomorrow

WARANGAL: The ICET-2006 results will be released on June 10. Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor V. Gopal Reddy said that the results would be announced on Saturday by the State Council of Higher Education Chairman K.C. Reddy. The results will be made available on the websites www.icetonline.com, www.kuwarangal.com, www.kakatiya.ac.in and www.apsche.org. - Staff Reporter

Slain ex-councillor's father dies

KADAPA: Death toll in last Friday's fatal attack on former Proddatur municipal councillor Budda Bhadra Reddy and his son B. Vikrant Reddy rose to three with Bhadra Reddy's father succumbing to stab wounds in Kurnool general hospital on Wednesday night.

Congress leader Bhadra Reddy and Vikrant Reddy were hacked to death while Subba Reddy was critically wounded when their rivals attacked them with hunting sickles in front of their house in Proddatur town last week. — Staff Reporter

Saibaba returns to Puttaparthi

ANANTPAUR: Satya Saibaba returned to Prashanti Nilayam in Puttaparthi after a gap of two months on Thursday. People, who flocked the roadsides from Mamillakunta crossroads to Puttaparthi, gave him reverential welcome. The devotees decorated the main road leading to Prashanti Nilayam with `rangoli'. Exhibition of paintings

TIRUPATI: Vijayawada-based "Impressions...The art promoters" will be holding a three-day exhibition-cum-sale of paintings by noted artist and film director Bapu at Balaji Bhavan exhibition hall near Railway station here from June 9.

Titled "Bapu Bommala Koluvu", the expo will have a number of canvas portraits of mythological events and social characters sketched by him.

According to organiser M. Rajaram, comic strips and images of `Budugu', will also be on display.The expo will be open from 9.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Civic official takes charge

VIZIANAGARAM : S.Sachidananda Verma has taken charge as Municipal Commissioner from in-charge Commissioner K.V.Srihari Rao.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Verma said that he would implement the citizen's charter in total and give priority to sanitation and drinking water besides Government welfare schemes. -Correspondent

Rs. 320-cr. credit plan for agriculture

VIZIANAGARAM: The credit plan for agriculture this year has been fixed at Rs.320 crores against Rs.264 crores last year, according to Collector B. Kishore. He told bankers at the bankers' meeting that 27,000 farmers, who had not availed themselves of credit so far, were identified during the recently-concluded Rythu Chaitanya Yatras and they must be given loans up to Rs.21.5 crores.

Under Indira Kranti Pathamthe target for the self-help groups was put at Rs.150 crores, he said. - Correspondent

Canara Bank gesture to leprosy unit

Rajahmundry: Canara Bank Gandhipuram branch has donated 70 steel cans to the inmates of Jeeva Karunya Sangham leprosy unit, near Headquarters Hospital. In a statement on Thursday GM SBR Babuji said that his bank as a part of centenary celebrations was participating in service-oriented programmes under Corporate Responsibility. DGM I.N. Motorist killed in accident

Kakinada: Rayudu Nagarjuna Rao (25) of Komaragiri village was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a speeding lorry near Pamugunta centre along the ADB road on the city outskirts on Thursday. Suravarpu Suresh (19) the pillion rider suffered injuries and his condition was stated to be serious. Thimmapuram police have registered the case. - Correspondent
