125 interns join `InStep' programme at Infosys

The programme gives students valuable professional experience

Bangalore: The induction ceremony for the 2006 batch of interns of "InStep", the global internship programme at Infosys, was held on the Infosys campus here on Thursday.

The programme was started in 1999 with 10 students. It has become a leading educational initiative of the information technology giant.

The duration of the programme can be from eight weeks to 24 weeks.

The programme gives students valuable professional experience and an opportunity to work on projects within Infosys.

The interns have to work on projects ranging from application development to business consulting, in practices that include marketing, corporate planning, education and research, enterprise solution, software engineering and technology laboratories.

The ceremony began with a presentation on Infosys and India. This was followed by a talk by K. Dinesh, co-founder of Infosys, and an interactive session with company Chief Mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy.

Addressing the interns, Mr. Murthy said, "We will demand that you work hard, we want the programme to be of tangible value to you and to us."

Talking about how the programme was designed to create and groom future leaders, Mr. Murthy said, "Leadership by example is the most powerful instrument for disseminating values and conferring people with the value system. The programme is designed to instil these qualities and values in future leaders."

Reynaldo Roche, an MBA student from the University of Pennsylvania, said, "The chance to work with Infosys and the chance to experience Indian culture was an unmatched opportunity. I preferred the internship to offers from IBM and an airlines."

Over 12,000 students had applied for the programme this year and after a screening process, 125 students from universities across America, Europe and Asia were inducted.
