BANGALORE: University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, will launch a novel project on Friday to ensure that the farmers get a reasonable price for their produce through organised marketing system. The project funded by the Department of Biotechnology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, will be launched by Planning Commission member V.L. Chopra at Hadonahalli in Doddaballapur taluk of Bangalore Rural district. The project will provide cutting-edge technology to farmers at their doorsteps under the guidance of farm scientists of the UAS, Bangalore. The Rs. 4.5-crore project will be implemented in the next five years with the participation of farmers. It would cover 7,049 farming families in 52 villages of five gram panchayats of Tubugere block in the taluk, UAS sources told The Hindu. The main objective of the project was to provide market access to products of farmers to make agriculture economically viable. The cooperatives would be used to procure products such as bio-fuel from farmers.
