Narmada plans fusion music album

K. Santhosh

THRISSUR: Violinist M. Narmada, who completes 25 years as a performer, plans to bring out an album of fusion music in association with a French violinist.

"This international project is being worked out. Hence, I won't reveal the name of the French violinist. I will only say he is a major player," Ms. Narmada told reporters here on Friday. s. Narmada, daughter and disciple of violin maestro M. S. Gopalakrishnan, will perform here on Saturday under the auspices of Bharatham. "This year, I also have plans to gift violins to underprivileged children and initiate them into the world of music," she said.

Ms. Narmada said the Parur style of violin-playing she imbibed from her father, which laid emphasis on `bhava' (emotional content) and approximated vocal music, helped her interpret Carnatic and Hindustani idioms well. I take care I don't mix styles. I've performed extensively in North India. A few concerts focussing on music of the seasons are being planned. Some concerts will focus on the Malhar group of ragas, which sound good during monsoon," she said. She said that Carnatic music had been enriched by different styles of violin-playing by stalwarts such as T. Chowdiah, Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai, Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, M. S. Gopalakrishnan, Lalgudi Jayaraman and T. N. Krishnan. "Each of them has his own style. My father has his. Mr. Lalgudi Jayaraman interprets the ragas, nagaswaram style. Mr. T. N. Krishnan is known for his soothing manner of presentation (sowkhya bhava')."
