Chiragh is champion

BANGALORE: Chiragh Kumar's second card of five under 65 propelled him to victory in the BGC-South India Open amateur tournament. Chiragh won by eight strokes with a four round cumulative score of nine under 271. Simarjeet Singh took the runner-up spot on countback on the final day. Three players Simarjeet Singh, Jasjeet Singh and Anirban Lahiri shared the points for the runner-up slot with identical scores of 279 for the four rounds.

Chiragh's win in the Amateur Open, in his own words, "was long overdue." He had come close to winning many times but finished runner-up.

Chiragh, who had a two-stroke lead going into the final day, played steadily but his rivals allowed him to extend his lead within the first few holes of the fourth round. Manav Jaini and Shaurya Singh carded bogeys in the first couple of holes to help Chiragh's cause.

Birdies on the fifth, eighth and ninth saw Chiragh go ahead by seven strokes. He, however, had a bogey on the 11th.

On the back nine Chiragh sank a birdie on the 14th and signed off with birdies on the 17th and 18th to win comfortably. His partners on the leader board dropped out and it was from the group ahead that the second spot was shared.

The results: 1. Chiragh Kumar (68, 65, 73, 65) 271; 2. Simarjeet Singh (74, 69, 68, 68), Jasjeet Singh (70, 69, 71, 69) and Anirban Lahiri (69, 67, 73, 70) 279 each; 5. Manav Jaini (72, 67, 69, 73) 281, 6. Joseph Chakola (72, 72, 68, 70) 282.
