BIJAPUR: The Krishna Kanive Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti has urged the Union and Karnataka governments to appeal to Maharashtra not to fill its reservoirs in the Krishna Basin before August-end to avoid the possibility of flash floods. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, samiti convenor and member of Bijapur Zilla Panchayat Panchappa Kalburgi expressed concern over reports that Maharashtra had started impounding water in its reservoirs to their capacity. He said Maharashtra's decision to fill dams, including Koyna, caused floods in Karnataka last year. That State filled reservoirs from June and July, and released large quantities of waters after heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats. It was doing so this year too. The Karnataka Government should prevail upon the Centre to give directions to Maharashtra in this regard.
