A SMOOTH RIDE: A physically challenged person finds his travel along M.O. Road in Thrissur easy on Friday following a dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party in protest against the fuel price hike.
Thrissur: A dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday in protest against the increase in prices of petrol and diesel was near total in Thrissur district. Shops and business establishments remained closed. Buses, both private and those belonging to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, stayed off the road. People were seen riding two-wheelers. A few private cars were also seen on the road. Protest marches were taken out in different parts of the district. Activists of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh took out a novel protest m arch from Kodakara to Thrissur town, featuring bullock carts.
Total, peaceful
Our Kottayam Staff Reporter writes: The vehicle strike called by the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) was near total and peaceful in the district. Private vehicles, such as cars and motorcycle, were seen on the roads. But buses, including those of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, were off the road. Shops and other commercial offices remained closed and attendance was thin in Government offices. Banks remained opened, but business was minimal. The police said that there had been no reports incidents of violence. BMS and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders took out protest marches in the town. According to reports from Idukki district, the strike was near total and peaceful. BMS leaders took out marches in Thodupuzha and Kattappana.
