Indian challenge ends

Singapore: Anup Sridhar's fine run in the Singapore Open badminton tournament came to an end with a straight game loss to second seed Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark 15-21, 15-21 in the quarterfinals here on Friday.

The 43rd-ranked Indian, who upset Andrew Smith of England 21-9, 21-16 en route to the last eight, was no match for his formidable Danish opponent, a winner here in 2004.

Earlier, Chetan Anand lost a close third round encounter against Malaysia's Saman Ismail 21-18, 11-21, 21-15.

In the second round of the women's singles event, Saina Nehwal could not reproduce her Philippines Open form and went down to the seventh-seeded Bulgarian Petya Nedeltcheva 21-11, 21-16. — UNI
