Inquiry initiated against Army officer

NEW DELHI: A lieutenant-colonel posted with the recruitment wing at Army Headquarters here was shifted out and a court of inquiry initiated against him on Friday after he was allegedly found taking a bribe of Rs.50,000 to "help" a Combined Defence Services candidate clear the entrance examination.

The officer, Pramod Kumar, had allegedly demanded Rs.1.5 lakh from the candidate and was accepting Rs. 50,000 as advance sum when he was caught red-handed.

`Criminal' killed in encounter

NEW DELHI: A Haryana-based alleged criminal involved in more than 30 cases of murder, robbery and extortion was gunned down in an encounter with the Special Cell of the Delhi police at Vasant Vihar here on Thursday night. A pistol was allegedly recovered from his possession.

Acting on a tip-off that Mukesh, who was involved in several criminal cases, would pass by the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Friday night, the police laid a trap and intercepted the Maruti car in which he was coming. They challenged the occupant asking him to surrender but he opened fire. In retaliatory fire, he sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Three persons suffer burn injuries

NEW DELHI: Three persons including two women suffered burn injuries in two separate incidents reported from Pushta at Sonia Vihar in North-East Delhi on Friday.

In the first incident, a 21-year-old newly married woman suffered burn injuries while she was cooking. The police suspect that that the fire was caused due to the leak in the gas-cylinder pipe.

Rinki Jha has suffered 95 per cent burns. Her husband Pradeep, who came into kitchen to rescue her, also suffered 65 per cent burns. They have both been admitted to G.T.B Hospital. An inquiry was ordered by the SDM. However, no foul play was found.

In a separate incident, the wife of the head constable at the Welcome police station suffered burn injuries while she was making tea. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Man held in UTI Bank robbery case

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man has been arrested for alleged involvement in the UTI Bank robbery case in Vikaspuri this past month. The police claim to have recovered Rs. 14.5 lakhs from his possession. Pawan Gupta was arrested after the accused in the case, Sandeep Bhatnagar, who posed as a human bomb and robbed the bank, disclosed during interrogation that he had planned the robbery with the help of his accomplices.
