Cuddalore
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: As for as the local body elections are concerned (due in October), Vijayakant, Vriddhachalam MLA and founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, is playing his cards close to his chest. He does not want to give room for any speculation and is content with saying that "since it is a long way off, it does not merit immediate attention." He made this observation at a press conference held here on Friday. Mr. Vijayakant said the DMDK being a fledgling party it ought to take every step cautiously. He would not entertain any questions relating to the DMDK either going it alone or seeking alliance with any other political party in the local body elections. However, he emphatically said in the event of a bye-election in Madurai (for the seat fallen vacant after the death of P.T.R. Palanivel Rajan), the DMDK would field its candidate.
`Wait and watch'
When his reaction was sought about the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme, he said any scheme beneficial to the people was welcome. However, he was adopting a "wait and watch" approach on the the DMK Government performabnce . He was yet to take a decision on his role in the South India Actors' Associaton.
