Chennai: Morning walkers and nature lovers at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore had a pleasant surprise last Sunday as they were greeted by the musical voice of V. Shreyas amid chirping of birds and squeaking of squirrels. The 13-year old provided a treat to their ears in a serene and cool ambience after overnight drizzle.

It was the fifth of the Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri in the park series. Shreyas, a standard VIII student of the Vani Vidyalaya, K.K. Nagar, was accompanied by R. Bharathi on the violin and R. Sriram on the mridangam. A student of P.B. Singarachari and Murali Parthasarathi, Shreyas is learning violin from Srinivasamurthy.

T.T. Srinivasaraghavan, Managing Director, Sundaram Finance, commending the performance, said the Sunday Kutcheri concept was essentially born out of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival, where young ones below 15 years showcased their talents. Based on the feedback, it was decided to tap the unrecognised talents and to promote community music spirit in a natural ambience without mikes and speakers.

The first group of children who performed at the park were from a semi-urban school in Vandalur, where many of them from less-privileged backgrounds came to study.

The concerts are open to children below 15 years on the first Sunday of every month, between 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. A committee, set up by Sundaram Finance, will conduct an audition test. Sundaram Finance will present certificates to the performing artists.

The sixth performance in the series will take place at the park on the first Sunday of July. Audition tests to select the artists are open. Details: 2855 8081 on weekdays between 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. or e-mail profile to ssiva@sundaramfinance.in.
