Udhagamandalam: Schoolchildren in some of the rural areas of the Nilgiris are now familiar with various aspects of organic farming, thanks to a Ketti-based non-Governmental organisation, EARTH TRUST. Awareness about the concept, particularly among students, would go a long way in protecting environment, the founder of EARTH TRUST, Vanya Orr, told The Hindu here on Saturday. The formation of eco-clubs in about 12 schools has helped promote organic farming. The concept contributed significantly towards protecting the health of the soil and the people. Singling out the Panchayat Union Middle School in Thenalai near Ketti for praise, she said its students and staff were going all out to make people switch over to organic farming. The students were growing organic vegetables in a `kitchen garden' formed near their school. The vegetables were supplied to the noon meal centre in the school. Headmistress Anthonyammal said the garden had bagged an award in the competitions organised during the 2006 Flower Show in May. District Elementary Education Officer C. Vasanth Kumar said formation of eco-clubs in schools should be encouraged as it would help check environmental degradation.
