MRPS leader drops fast move

Hyderabad: Manda Krishna, leader of Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS), who is spearheading an agitation for the SC categorisation, dropped his proposed indefinite fast move after talks with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Saturday.

Mr. Manda Krishna later claimed that the Chief Minister assured him of a statement by the Centre in favour of the samithi's demand. - Special Correspondent

Weaver commits suicide

KARIMNAGAR: A powerloom weaver, Korem Anjaiah, 65, committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling in his house at Sundaraiahnagar of Sircilla town on Friday night due to mounting debts.

He is survived by three sons and a daughter. - Staff Reporter

Vidyut adalat

VISAKHAPATNAM: T he first vidyut adalat conducted by the Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd. of Andhra Pradesh on Monday resolved 284 complaints out of 462 in the five districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari.

The adalat, being held every Monday, addresses complaints regarding rectification of wrong billing, replacement of defective meters and restringing loose spans of electrical lines. - Staff Reporter

Former TDP MLA joins Congress

Hyderabad: Former TDP MLA Rambhadraiah of Mahbubabad in Warngal district, along with 200 of his followers, joined the Congress here on Saturday.

The former MLA said he was impressed by the `jala yagnam' launched by the ruling party and other pro-people policies of it.

He was admitted into the party by Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president K. Keshava Rao.-Special Correspondent

Two students held on theft charge

VIZIANAGARAM: Two students -- V. Krishna Prasad and K. Rama Chandra Sekhar of Srikakulam -- were arrested on Friday evening and two servers, a ram, two keyboards and two mouses worth Rs. 2.10 lakhs recovered from them.

The computer peripherals were stolen from M.R. Post-graduate College where Krishna Prasad studied MCA in the intervening night of June 5 and6, said Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann at a press conference on Saturday.

He said that they committed the theft after a private company offered Rama Chandra Sekhar, a B.Tech drop out, a job if only he deposited Rs. 40,000 as security. - Correspondent

CITU website launched

HYDERABAD: The website of the State unit of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) was launched here on Saturday by Kerala Labour Minister and national secretary of the organisation P.K. Gurudasan.

State Labour Minister G. Vinod was also present. CITU State president R. Sudhabhaskar and general secretary S. Veeraiah explained the importance of the portal for working class movements. - Special Correspondent

Isolated rain forecast

HYDERABAD: There was rain at a few places in coastal Andhra on Saturday and it was isolated in Rayalaseema. Weather was dry in Telangana.

Machilipatnam and Sattenapalli recorded a rainfall of 2 cm each and Gudiwada, Prakasam Barrage and Kandukur 1 cm each.

Temperature in the State rose again.

During the 24-hour period ending Saturday morning, Ramagundam and Nizamabad recorded temperature at 40 degree Celsius, the highest in the State for the day.

Isolated rain will continue in the State on Sunday also, according to a forecast issued by the State Met Office. - Special Correspondent

Help centres for PG students

KADAPA: Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) will set up help centres for post-graduate students attending counselling of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, its southern region general secretary S.M.D. Ishaq Ahmed said on Saturday.

Students taking part in counselling would be guided on admission procedures, filling of applications, details of seats, reservations and scholarships, he said. Interested candidates could contact him on phone no. 92472 27121, he said. - Staff Reporter

Two arrested in raid

MADANAPALLE : In a raid by the police of Vayalpad, 120 litres of liquor was seized along with a two-wheeler and two persons- Bukhya Naick of Enugondapalem Thanda and Devarinti Chamanchi of Gangadoddi village were arrested.

Sub Inspector Chandrasekhar produced the accused before the Magistrate.-Correspondent

Godman's gesture

ANANTAPUR: Sai Kaleshwar, a self-styled godman based at Penukonda in the district, on Saturday offered to donate Rs. 2 crores for creation of infrastructure for the new engineering college to be set up by Sri Krishnadevaraya University.

University Vice Chancellor A. Rama Rao along with Registrar R. Ramakrishna Reddy and University college Principal C.R. Reddy called urged Sai Kaleshwar to help towards the cause of education as the college was coming up in the drought-prone district.

New telephone exchange building

VIZIANAGARAM: Lok Sabha member from Visakhapatnam N.Janardhana Reddy inaugurated the new telephone exchange building built at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs and commissioned the CellOne tower at L.Kota on Saturday. Vizianagaram Telecom General Manager K.neelayya , Minister for Marketing B.Satyanarayana, MLAs P.Mangapathi Rao (Uttarapalli) and K.Ravi Babu (S.Kota) were present. — Correspondent

ONGOLE: S. L. Arunakant secured fourth rank in ICET 2006 examination, the results of which were announced today. He was a student of Sri Harishini degree college and took coaching in the Institute of Mathematics at Ongole, said Venkatarao, secretary. — Special Correspondent

Plea to State Government

CHIRALA: Dr. Bandlamudi Subba Rao, president, Prof. N. G. Ranga Foundation, in a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, urged him to declare Vijayanagara emperor Srikrishna Devarayalu as national Telugu poet.

When Tamil Nadu Government could declare Thiruvalluvar as national Tamil poet, why can't the State Government declare the Vijayanagara emperor as a national poet, reasoned Dr. Subba Rao. — Correspondent
