Thiruvananthapuram: The police were still in the dark about those responsible for the gangland murder of Binu alias "Manickam" Binu at Pappanamcode on Thursday night. Binu was hacked to death sometime between 10.30 p.m. and 12 a.m. in a secluded area at Satyam Nagar in the Nemom police station limits. The police said it was highly unlikely that anybody had witnessed the murder that had occurred in the odd hours at an out-of-the-way spot accessible only by foot or motorcycle. Circle Inspector, Nemom, K.B. Ravi Kumar, who is investigating the case, believes that the cell phone of the victim could provide important clues. The mobile phone was recovered from the scene of crime. He said Binu's killers had ensured that they left no vital clues behind. The CI said little was known of the recent activities of Binu, who is accused in 10 cases, including murder and sexual harassment. Binu rarely slept at his house. The CI said even relatives knew little about Binu's deeds. For the past two years, Binu had been careful not to get named as accused in any criminal case. The last case registered against him by the city police was in 2004. However, the police believe that Binu continued to have secret associations with criminals and gang leaders in the city. At one point of time, he was close to "Motta" Ani, a gang leader who was hacked to death at Thaliyil in Karamana this February. According to police sources, the remnants of "Motta" Ani's gang could be responsible for Binu's death. "It was rumoured that Binu hosted a party to celebrate Ani's death," an official said. The police said that Binu was deep into "muscle-for-money" operations in the city.
