dated June 12, 1956: Martial law in Argentina

Martial law was declared in Argentina early on June 10, as rebel troops under the command of General Raul Tengo and General Juan Jose Valle, followers of ex-President Juan Peron, launched surprise attacks in several parts of the country. Later in the night, Vice-President Rojas announced over the State radio that the rebels in La Plata and Santa Rosa had surrendered and all fighting had ended. However, a counter-claim was made by the rebels in a radio broadcast heard in Santiago, Chile, that they had captured President Pedro Aramburu. The Government intelligence service reported in the night that 33 rebels had been executed so far. Gen. Aramburu had become President last November, seven weeks after a revolt, in which he played a leading part, overthrew the 13-year-old dictatorship of Juan Peron. Peron is now in exile.
