Illegal liquor sale on the rise: samiti

It has sought strict implementation of the Excise Act

BIJAPUR: Karnataka Rajya Madyapana Virodhi Andolana Samiti, a voluntary organisation working against liquor consumption, has urged the State Government to implement the Excise Act in letter and spirit.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, samiti president A.T. Babu said one could hardly expect the Government to impose a ban on liquor.

`Enforce excise laws'

It should at least enforce the excise laws strictly if it was concerned about the welfare of poor and oppressed class, he said.

He said illegal liquor sale was on the rise thanks to nexus between politicians, officials and liquor traders. It was estimated that around 150 per cent of existing liquor shops were illegal ones. His organisation had launched a survey to find out the exact number of licensed and unlicensed shops in the State. Norms with regard to location of liquor shops were also blatantly violated. The samiti had evolved an extensive awareness programme on the issue, he added. Mr. Babu announced the formation of the district unit with Srinivas Gurjal as its president. Indumati Lambani has been named vice-president and Motiram Chauvan is the organising secretary.
