New York: The Hindu 's Rural Affairs Editor P. Sainath has won the Judges' prize (newspaper category) in the 2005 Harry Chapin Media Awards here. This is for his series in the paper on the agrarian crisis.

Mr. Sainath is the only international winner of the prize this year. Awardees in other categories include journalists from The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Time magazine, all of them from the United States.

The Harry Chapin Media Awards (HCMAs) honour print and electronic media for work "that focuses on the causes of hunger and poverty," including "work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic and international policies and their reform, community empowerment, sustainable development, food production."

The Judges' prize given to Mr. Sainath for 2005 went in 2004 to a reporter from The Washington Post.

The New York Times and the Post have been frequent winners of the Chapin awards in past years. Besides the Judges' prize, categories include book, broadcast, newspaper and photojournalism.

The awards were established in 1982 and are administered and financed by World Hunger Year (WHY) and named in honour of WHY's co-founder, the late singer/songwriter Harry Chapin. The awards are cash prizes of $ 1,000 to $ 2,500 in each category.

The award function is to be held at the New School University on October 17 this year.
