Tributes paid to N.T. Vanamamalai

His legal acumen and commitment to ideology remembered

CHENNAI: Leaders from a wide spectrum of society paid rich tributes to N.T. Vanamamalai, senior advocate in the Madras High Court who passed away here on May 28.

While Judges R. Balasubramanian and K.N. Basha said their legal acumen got enriched by their decades-long association with the doyen of the Madras Bar, Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders R. Nallakannu and D. Pandiyan said NTV did full justice to his profession as well as his ideology.

"He was deeply pained by the split of Communist Party and till the end yearned for their reunification," remarked Mr. Pandiyan.

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , said the occasion was not to mourn but to celebrate the life and works of somebody who lived a full life. Describing NTV as a personal friend, Mr. Ram said, "I valued his sharp and great intellect." NTV was someone who came into the Communist movement due to intellectual commitment and was not pushed into it.

R. Vaigai, advocate, said NTV's demise was a big loss to everyone in the legal profession, and stressed the need to carry on the work he had initiated during his lifetime.

Vairamuthu

Lyricist Vairamuthu said NTV's life was his message to the legal fraternity and admired the jurist's quality of consciously shunning self-projection.

Industrialist R. Veeramani, general secretary of the Indian Society for Cultural Cooperation and Friendship P. Thangappan, Stanislav I. Simakov of the Consulate-General of Russia, senior advocate V. Gopinath and V. Balu paid homage to N.T. Vanamamalai.
