Claymore mines unearthed

KURNOOL: The bomb disposal squad unearthed claymore mines in the Nallamala forest in Kurnool district on Saturday. One kg of gelatine sticks was recovered.

Following information, Officer on Special Duty Rajasekhar Babu directed the bomb disposal squad to a place known as Kukkalagondu near Chalama railway station. The mines were planted on the route used by combing teams of the Police Department. - Staff Reporter

BCs warn State on engineering fee

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes' Welfare Association has warned the Government that it will stall the counselling for engineering seats if the Government decides to hike the course fee.

In a statement here on Sunday, R. Krishnaiah, president of the association, said professional courses were becoming out of bounds for the poor and the middle classes. A further hike in fee for engineering courses now would deal a major blow to those unable to afford it, he said. - Special Correspondent

Red sanders seized; constable held

KADAPA: A police constable of Srikalahasti, Sundar, and a car driver, Srinivasulu of Tirupati, were arrested and 16 logs of red sanders worth Rs. 65,000 were seized from a car near a check-post at Siddhavatam, according to Siddhavatam Forest Ranger Nagabhushanam. NFIW's demand on women quota bill

HYDERABAD: The National Federation of Indian Women has demanded that the UPA Government take steps to pass the women's reservation bill for implementing 1/3rd reservation to women in Parliament and legislatures.

NFIW working president Gargi Chakravarthy hailed the Government for passing bills against domestic violence on women, child marriages and compulsory registration of marriages. She also demanded that the Government take steps to roll back petrol and diesel prices. - Special Correspondent

BJP meet on June 15

HYDERABAD: The State executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party, scheduled for June 16 and 17, has been cancelled in view of the announcement of the panchayat election schedule. However, a meeting of the State office-bearers would be held on June 15 in which district unit presidents will also participate, according to a party release. - Special Correspondent

Best journalist award

GUNTUR: The Prajashakti Sahiti Samstha has chosen Cottam Nagaraju, a reporter in `Vaartha' Telugu daily from Metpalli in Karimnagar, for this year's Moturu Hanumantha Rao memorial Best Journalist Award. The topic this year was `Health Sector and Changes'.

School teachers to join protest

HYDERABAD: The national secretariat of School Teachers Federation of India (STFI), which met here on Sunday decided to join various trade unions in observing the All-India Protest Day on June 14 against anti-people policies of the UPA Government.

The STFI president Karthik Mandal, general secretary K. Rajendran and other leaders said that it had decided to observe the organisation's foundation day on August 12 as demands day. - Special Correspondent

MP's call to students

HYDERABAD: S. Sudhakar Reddy, MP (CPI), has asked the student community to intensify their agitations against the `anti-student' policies being adopted by the ruling class that were depriving quality education to poor and middle class students.

PDS kerosene seized

ANANTAPUR: A team of revenue officials led by Revenue Divisional Officer of Anantapur A.V. Ramprasad on Sunday seized 1,745 litres of blue kerosene meant for public distribution system stored illegally at three places near Gooty.

According to district Collector Dasari Kadmial, raids were conducted at three places based on a tip-off. Gooty MRO Muthyala Reddy, Circle Inspector Raghava Reddy and others participated in the raids. - Staff Reporter

Man held with liquor sachets

Madanapalle: Molakalacheruvu Excise CI Govind Naik has said that one M. Venkatramana Reddy was arrested with 700 liquor sachets on Saturday. He said that the two-wheeler used in transporting the sachets was also seized. - Correspondent

Murder case booked

Kakinada: The Rajanagaram police have altered an accident case to that of a murder after 14 months of investigation. Kondeti Bhadram (48) of Rajahmundry was found dead along the roadside at Kondagunturu village on the NH on March 24 last year. Basing on the complaint lodged by the deceased's brother, the police reopened the case and found that it was a case of murder involving Bahdram's wife and relatives. Efforts were on to nab the accused, to police said. - Correspondent

Free medical camp

Kakinada: Some 150 patients suffering from various ailments were screened at a free medical camp organised under the auspices of All-India Women's Conference at Ashram Sravani, the home for the aged, in Ramanaiahpet area here on Sunday. A team of doctors consisting of Jagadesweri, Lakshmi and Seshumamba examined the patients and gave free medicines. Durga Somuprasad Charitable Trust donated medicines. - Correspondent
