SHIMOGA: President of the Shimoga district Kannada Sahitya Sammelan D. Manjunath said on Sunday that the dates for the three-day 73rd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan to be held here were likely to be finalised by the month-end.

    Promise

Presiding over a meeting on the preparations to be made for the sammelan, he said Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who is in charge of the district, promised a delegation of the parishat on Sunday that he would indicate the dates by month end.

    Preparations

Subsequently, preparations would begin with the formation of a reception committee, he said.

Mr. Manjunath said suggestions made by various literary and cultural organisations included a separate session on the people's movements launched in the district, including the "Kagodu Satyagraha" and the farmers' movement.

The other suggestions were to hold sessions on the origin and growth of Kannada theatre and children's literature, and a spiritual session to be addressed by heads of various religious institutions, he said.

    Awareness

It was suggested to organise a cycle jatha in Shimoga on the eve of the sammelan to create awareness on the environment, and culture and heritage of the State. There was a proposal to hold "Samskritika Habba" (cultural festival) as part of the sammelan, he said.

Former Shimoga MLA H.M. Chandrasekharappa and general secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (Puttannaiah group) K.T. Gangadhar were present.
