BANGALORE: Despite protests and acts of vandalism, Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE), which is implementing the multi-crore Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project, has opted to go ahead with its scheduled launch of the first phase of the project and throw open the 9.2-km stretch of the expressway on June 16. Questions were raised about the inauguration after some farmers dug a section of the expressway near Hemmigepura village on the outskirts of the city to register their protest against the project. The NICE officials have reportedly registered a case with the Thalghatpura police, and were hoping that the police would take action against the guilty. The company proposed to repair the damaged part of the road and throw open the stretch of the highway on June 16 as announced earlier. The Thalghatpura police were yet to make any arrests in connection with Saturday's incident. Forest Minister C. Chennigappa, who is in charge of Bangalore Rural district, said the Government would take action against those responsible for the act of vandalism. The Janata Dal (S) was in no way involved in the incident, he said. On Sunday, villagers continued their protest demanding that NICE provide them facilities such as roads and borewell and pay a higher compensation for their land.
