Water meters: former Mayor writes to Koneru

Staff Reporter

Suggestion to leave water meter issue to discretion of elected representatives

VIJAYAWADA: Former Mayor T. Venkateswara Rao of the Communist Party of India has suggested to Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao to leave issues such as water meters to the discretion of elected representatives and, instead, strengthen local self-governance by clearing the pending grants and dues.

In a letter to the Minister, which was released to the media, Mr. Rao said that 60 per cent of the total amount of water supplied by the corporation was not being accounted for, which was a failure of the corporation officials. Even if water meters were fixed, hardly one to two per cent of the 35 per cent waste could be curtailed.

He sought to know why the State Government should dictate terms to local bodies in respect of these issues.
