Expert praises State's irrigation initiatives

Government's response in providing all relevant documents lauded

VIJAYAWADA: P.G. Sastri, chairman of the committee in the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, on Sunday lauded the State Government for giving environmental clearance to irrigation projects and described the irrigation initiative of the State as the world's largest programme ever taken up. He said that the Government was promptly providing all the relevant documents to enable the committee to issue clearances.

Making a power-point presentation on `Krishna basin development and irrigation projects in AP' at the 7th anniversary celebrations of Telugu evening daily `Swarnaandhra' here, Dr. Sastri said that clearances for most projects taken up by the Government had been given by now. It was now for all the agencies concerned to ensure proper execution of these projects.

Awards presented

The `Swarnandhra' management presented `Best Corporator Award' to 6th division corporator Ijjada Appala Naidu and `Best Woman Corporator Award' to 4th division corporator Anne Prasanna. `Best Print Media Journalist Award' was presented to A. Saye Sekhar, Chief of Bureau of The Hindu here, while `Best Electronic Media Journalist Award' was given to Ch. Sai, Regional Chief of Bureau of Telugu news channel TV 9.

Dr. Sastri praised `Swarnandhra' editor K.B.G. Tilak for his effort in maintaining standards in journalism. Dr. Sastri said that the State was facing problems on the irrigation front mainly because it was a tail-end State.

He cautioned that if there was any delay in execution of irrigation projects, their cost would go up.
