JD (S) leader welcomes cut in BMP budget

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former chairman of the Public Health Committee of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) R. Pradeep Kumar Reddy has lauded the Government move to cut the BMP budgetary allocations by Rs. 500 crore.

In a statement here on Sunday, he said the Government should supersede the BMP council as he feared "looting of the BMP funds" in view of the elections to the corporation council due in three months. By appointing an administrator the Government could save a lot of money, he said.

Mr. Pradeep Kumar Reddy said credit should go to the corporation Commissioner K. Jairaj for trying to bring in probity, accountability and proficiency in the functioning of the BMP. It was sad that a section of councillors were out "to make a fast buck," he said. Rather than providing better civic amenities at least in their constituencies, the councillors were largely looking the other way, he said. He said the decision of the Government to prune the BMP's "ballooning" budget and to curtail the "illogically inflated Mayor's fund" was "apt, germane and well timed".

The creation of a pioneering genre of funds with dubious nomenclature was unheard of in any of the city municipal corporations in the country, he said.
