This Day That Age
Master Tara Singh, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal, said in a statement at Amritsar on June 11 that the Akali Dal would exist as an independent organisation and there was no question of "settlement with the Congress." He said the way had been paved for co-operation with the Government after a settlement on the future of the Punjab. This did not mean an improvement of relations with the Congress. The statement added, "Efforts are being made to create misunderstanding in some quarters with regard to our relations with the Congress. So, I wish to make it clear that we have arrived at a settlement with the Government and paved the way to our co-operation with the Government in its constructive programme and allied matters. But we are free to refuse to co-operate or even oppose where we disagree or where we find something not in the interest of the country or the Panth."
