Worrying overreach

This refers to the op-ed page article, `Films and the politics of convenience' (June 12). The banning of the film, The Da Vinci Code, by some State Governments is, as pointed out in the article, a "worrying overreach."

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, representing the major Christian groups in the country, suggested that the film be screened with a disclaimer clause attached to it. It was complied with. It should have been left at that. There was no need to ban it.

K.K. Cherian,
Bangalore
