Jammu: Three grenade explosions rocked the main general bus stand here on Monday morning, killing one person and injuring 35 others. The blasts occurred 1.5 km away from the MAM stadium, first base camp for the Amarnath Yatra.

Eyewitness told The Hindu that at 7.32 a.m a grenade was lobbed from an overhead bridge on a bus headed for Katra town, main base camp of the Vaishno Devi Shrine. Two explosions followed in quick succession. A conductor, Madan Lal of Udhampur, diedon the spot

Many of the injured were pilgrims from other parts of the country bound for Vaishno Devi and the Amarnath shrine. Eight buses were damaged.

The police said the impact would have been severe had the buses had been full to capacity.

The main bus stand in the heart of the city has often been a soft target of militants. Mehmood Niaz, Jammu-Kathua Deputy Inspector-General, said security around the bus stand was tightened and all steps were taken to ensure passenger safety.
