Transporters suspend operations

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Monday collapsed while addressing a rally here against hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Ms. Banerjee who had walked in the hot sun in a procession to the venue, in the central part of the city, fainted in the course of her speech.

A recovered Ms. Banerjee announced her party's plans to agitate against the rise in prices of petrol and diesel. She criticised the United Progressive Alliance and the Left parties.

Operators of public transport and goods carriers, owing allegiance to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and other Left trade unions stopped their vehicles for five minutes at noon across the State in protest against the fuel price hike.

Demonstrations were staged and processions taken out in different parts of the State denouncing the increase in prices.

The Left Front has called for a protest day in the State on Tuesday against the Centre's move as part of the nation-wide stir against the fuel price rise by all Left parties and some regional parties.
