TOKYO: A strong earthquake of 6.2 magnitude shook southern Japan early on Monday and injured at least seven persons, but there was no danger of a tsunami, officials and reports said. The quake occurred at about 5 a.m. local time 140 km underground in Oita prefecture (State) on the southern main island of Kyushu, and shook wide areas of southern and western Japan, the Government's meteorological agency said. A second, milder quake, registering magnitude 4.8 happened three hours later off the coast of Aomori in northern Japan. The meteorological agency said there was no danger of a tsunami from either temblor. In Hiroshima prefecture in western Japan, an 82-year-old woman broke her leg as she fell to the ground while walking her dog, and a 14-year-old student was hit by a falling object and suffered a slight head injury, a prefectural police spokesman said on condition of anonymity, citing protocol. Another person in Hiroshima and four others in the south-western prefectures also suffered minor injuries, Kyodo reported.
